Cotton Candy's  foaling
Our first mini foaling experience.
It's a girl!!!
See bottom on page!

Candy's pictures and our notes through her
last stages of development
and our foaling experience.

Mid March 2005

This was when we first found out she was pregnant for sure and
didn't know when she was due so we are preparing for anytime.
She has no udder development at this time
but, maiden mares frequently won't
until just before or after foaling.

Mid April 2005

Now we have a small  bag but can't get any milk.
We are thrilled that she started one though!

Mid May, 2005

Yahoo... finally a bag that is developing well!. It could
be anytime now! We can now extract
some milk also. It's clear with
a little yellowish tint to it.
The consistency has varied for watery to sticky
at any given time. No real taste at all
Yes folks, I actually have tasted it! I was told that it
can very from salty to sweet etc. and sweeter
when foaling is close. So I figured it is worth a try
and yet another tool to use.

May 21, 2005

Wow, I guess we're getting somewhere now!
Her bag is getting pretty big (we can easily get
milk....still the same color etc.).

Her vulva is  longated and puffier now.
Note the one on May 6th still has a wrinkled look
and on May 21st it doesn't.

Here's a picture we took ( May 21st) from the video camera and what we see
when we are watching her from the house.
I also have to say she was especially crabby this evening
and tried to bite me ( a big no, no around here)!
She is visibly uncomfortable these days and clearly very
annoyed and just doesn't want to be bothered.
Poor thing, I hope she has it soon!

May 21st

You can see her hip area looks caved in
and her tail is very pointy looking.
She is soft around her tail  area etc.
Again, she's been looking like this for a couple of weeks now,
so we don't know if it will look worse yet or
not before foaling or not.

Temperature watching
We started taking her temp. each morning and night on
May 20th. Seems that some mares will have a drop in their evening temp.
or stays the same as their am temp, instead of rising a little.
Hey about now, we are doing anything we can to get a sign! LOL

BARN MOM NOTES

May 22rd - she was very restless all day and all night.
When she went down, she did it in area's that she hasn't
before. Her behavior is very crabby
and just doesn't want to be bothered at all.
May 23nd - about the same as yesterday so far and it's 4 pm now.
She was out earlier, but wanted back in after a couple of hours.
I feed early tonight and will go back out later and recheck her and take her temp.
This lack of sleep is really getting to me... I
hope it will be over soon and we have a healthy baby.
May24th- Candy was fairly quiet last night so I was able to get some sleep.
Or I should say, more then I have been this past few weeks.
I turned her out at around 9:30 this morning.
It's sort of a misty damp outside as it rained last night.
Hopefully the rain will hold off until after Candy is back in her stall,
otherwise, I'll bring her in earlier then usual.
Oh Drat's, it's starting to rain ( about 11:15 am) I have to go bring her in now!
May25th- fairly normal day. However her bag was very hard this evening
and couldn't get any milk easily so I didn't force it..
We will see if this means anything! As I was grooming her and taking her evening
temp.,  I had my arm on her tail bone and could actually feel a tightning
as if something was pushing and movement on each side of the tail bone!
It was the baby  right there in poition waiting to come out! I can only hope
it will be soon and the waiting part is over.
May 26th - Well this morning her bag was even fuller then last night and
and milk was flowing easily at barely a touch.. I could have sworn it looked a little whitish.
I'm going to recheck that later to be sure as I was busy
at the moment to extract any! Maybe it's only wishful thinking!
Well your not going to believe it! She had it when I turned her out!
I saw her at about 11:20-11:30 and went back out at about 12:15
(with my camera no less as I wanted pictures of her today,
expecting her to foal tonight!) and there they where standing with the baby nursing!
Here she is..................
Candy's Majestic Dreamer
at about 8 hours old

I have a ton of pictures to upload but I will do that tomorrow!
She weights 28 pounds and 22 inches tall
and grulla color, just like her mom!
Very cute and very sweet! She's already
developed her own personality!

Baby pictures!
