Tricia's Notes

Candy's Majestic Dreamer is finally here!

I  have realized, for the first time,
how frustrating foal watching can be. On the flip side,
the many thoughts and visions of a new miniature foal just tickles me to pieces. The emotional roller coaster seems endless.

When we found out that Candy was100% in foal,
I knew I wanted to be as much a part of the foaling process as my mother-in-law…maybe even a bit more, I think I was OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) about the whole ordeal.
After that fine day in mid-March, I began to find myself constantly out in the barn watching Candy for continuous hours. As April rolled around and her body beginning to show more obvious signs of being in foal, I found myself in the barn for endless hours on end, completely losing myself in time. Candy was developing milk in her udders and displaying a full rounded out belly, while the baby rumbled around in her like an alien. In my mind, I knew it had to be anytime now and at times, this is it….WRONG!
May has rolled around and now Candy's development is progressing rapidly. She is bagging up more and more everyday, her croup has softened a lot more and her belly has dropped. When is this girl going to have this baby!!!! The anticipation is just eating me inside. I cannot sleep, I do not want to do anything else, I cannot stop watching her, because I will never forgive myself if I miss it.
Mid May is here and Candy has still not foaled, please Lord tell me why this mare has not foaled yet…is it me? Well, now, we have a wireless barn cam setup, whew thank goodness, no more freezy cold nights in the barn or tiptoeing around so she does not hear me…Now I can pull a couple of good all nighters!
As I sit and watch, every evening, I notice Candy is displaying many new physical and emotional signs. Her bags are huge and we are getting milk! Yippie, this must be the day…WRONG! Candy is showing all the typical signs of a mare in foal, she is:
- Yawning
- Pawing
- Looking at her belly
- Biting at her belly
- Tail swooshing
- Stomping
- Pacing
- Distracted
Just a note, I could go on and on.
Well, our sweet little Candy has done this for weeks now and
still no baby, now, it is anyone’s guess.
Then, on May 25th, I noticed that Candy’s udders appeared to be really hard and her vulva is a dark pink. I tell my mother-in-law, but as the story goes, your guess is as good as mine.
Then, on May 26th, I missed a few calls from my mother-in-law, I am at a friends house having some coffee when I realized I had some new voice mail messages. I proceed to check them @ 12:40pm in the early afternoon and sure enough…..Candy foaled out in the ride ring while nobody was watching.
I thought MOST mares, a good 80%, foaled between the hours of 10pm and 4am…..I will never listen to another text book delivery again!
But we do have the most beautiful filly mini foal named Candy's Majestic Dreamer, and she is just that, a dream!

Dreamer and I the first day!
