Thrush
Thrush begins as an infection of the frog.
It is typically detected by the rotten odor that is evident as soon as you pick up a hoof.
Thrush is a disease of the hoof that can eventually eat away enough of the frog so that the horse
will bleed with as little as a brush of the hoof pick. (Extreme cases, left untreated,
will eat away the sole of the hoof and penetrate the vital structures underneath.)

Treated at the onset, a complete cure is quick and easy,
taking anywhere from a few days to a week or more.

50/50 solution of water and household bleach
works very well. I like it in a spray bottle.
Be careful however as it will stain your cloths!

Another thing I have used that works very well is
hydrated lime. That's right, lime. The kind you use
in your stalls. It really dries it up fairly quickly.
Be sure to where gloves!

Others have used 7% iodine on the infected area and
have had equally good results.

There are also several excellent thrush medications you can purchase.

If  in doubt on what to do, please
contact your vet for the best advice!
